A group of influential Silicon Valley figures wants to create a brand-new, technologically cutting-edge city in northern California.
The creators of the strategy include Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Steve Jobs and the head of the nonprofit Emerson Collective, and Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn.
According to the New York Times, former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and Striper co-founders Patrick and John Collison are among the other investors. Together, they established Flannery Associates to purchase 55,000 acres of rural and vacant land in Solano County close to San Francisco.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the price of the land purchase was around $800 million. According to material provided to residents of Solano County last week, Jan Sramek, a 36-year-old former trader at Goldman Sachs, is in charge of the project and plans to establish the new city between Fairfield and Rio Vista.
According to screenshots seen by the Journal, residents received anonymous text polls asking for their thoughts on the development of a metropolis with tens of thousands of new homes, a sizable solar energy farm, orchards, and open space.

Since the area is currently zoned for agricultural usage rather than residential or commercial use, creating a new city there would require a county referendum. The vicinity of Travis Air Force Base and the region’s size make the tech billionaire collective San Francisco’s greatest landowners.
Since local lawmakers have voiced concerns about Flannery Associates’ ownership and funding as well as its proximity to the military facility, the company has become more open about its backers.
Lawmakers, including Reps. John Garamendi and Mike Thompson, requested a federal investigation into the real estate acquisitions in response to a lawsuit filed in May by the corporation in an effort to find out who was funding the group.
