In Garyville, Louisiana, a significant fire broke out at a storage tank within a refinery. Thankfully, the fire department successfully controlled the fire’s spread, preventing further escalation.
Initially, due to the potential danger posed by the fire and its associated fumes, local authorities issued a mandatory evacuation order, covering a substantial two-mile radius around the refinery. However, as the situation improved and the fire was brought under control, this evacuation order was later lifted, allowing residents to return to their homes.
The fire itself was contained within a designated containment area, primarily involving two storage tanks located on the refinery’s premises. Unfortunately, the intensity of the fire caused damage to both of these tanks. To ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the fire, an investigation will be conducted, aiming to determine the incident’s root cause.

It’s important to note that the fire did not originate within the tank itself. Rather, it encircled the perimeter of one of the tanks. This particular tank contained a naphtha product, which is an intermediate substance used in the production of gasoline. This distinction is crucial because it implies that the tank’s structural integrity remained intact despite the presence of fire in its vicinity.
While the fire seemed manageable initially, the situation took a turn for the worse as the day progressed and temperatures rose. The heightened heat caused the fire to intensify and spread further, necessitating more concerted efforts from the firefighting teams.
The objective now is to fully extinguish the fire, ensuring that it poses no more risks. However, traces of intermittent smoke are still visible, underscoring the challenges in fully containing the incident.
Amid these efforts, one firefighter is currently undergoing evaluation for potential heat stress, highlighting the physical toll and risks associated with battling such fires under challenging conditions.
Marathon Petroleum Corporation, the entity overseeing the refinery, is placing paramount importance on safeguarding the safety of all individuals involved, including employees, contractors, and neighboring communities.
Additionally, the company is committed to minimizing any potential environmental impact that might result from the incident. An integral part of these efforts will involve conducting a thorough investigation to understand the factors that contributed to the fire.
