World’s First AI Safety Summit to Be Held at Site of WWII Codebreakers in Britain

In Bletchley Park, the home of the codebreakers who cracked the code that ended World War Two, the British government will convene the first artificial intelligence safety symposium ever.

The forum will bring together foreign governments, top AI companies, and research specialists to talk about the “safe development and use of frontier AI technology,” the government announced in a news statement on Thursday.

The British government said that the event will be held on Nov. 1 and 2. It will explore how risks associated with AI, particularly those that are at the cutting edge of development, might be reduced through international cooperation.

Large U.S. tech corporations like Microsoft, which supported OpenAI, the author of ChatGPT, Google, which owns the generative AI chatbot Bard, and Meta, which is in charge of the Llama open-source big language model, are the primary leaders in the AI race.

DeepMind, the U.K. AI lab, and Synthesia, a digital media platform that enables users to produce AI-generated videos, are just two of the top firms based in the U.K. that are engaged in the study, development, and commercial production of AI.

Alan Turing, an English mathematician, computer scientist, and cryptographer, oversaw the effort that succeeded in decrypting German military strategy messages. Turing is usually regarded as the founder of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.

UK Aims to Lead in AI and Innovation

After declines in venture capital investment, the U.K. tech sector has recently slowed down. According to data from VC firm Atomico, the total amount of capital going into the U.K.’s IT sector decreased by 57% in the first half of 2023 to $7.4 billion.

With the introduction of measures to embrace innovation like virtual currencies, blockchain, and the so-called “Web3,” Britain has been positioning itself as a worldwide technological leader.

The newest technology that the nation is focusing on and in which it seeks to set international standards is AI. As the “geographical home of global AI safety regulation,” Sunak promoted Britain in June. But the United Kingdom has a long way to go before it can compete with powerful nations like the United States and China.

With major companies investing heavily in AI, the U.S. is by far the world leader in this field. With the debut of their own generative AI chatbots by Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu and the establishment of regulations for these services by Beijing, China has also been intensifying its AI effort.
