In spite of a strange cart incident that delayed the start of his race, American Noah Lyles resumed his pursuit of two sprint gold medals at the World Athletics Championships by cruising into the men’s 200-meter final.
Lyles, a two-time world champion in the 200 meters, ran 19.76 seconds to set the quickest time in the semi-finals on Thursday, just four days after winning the 100 meters.
The golf cart that was taking Lyles and the other runners from the warm-up track to the stadium collided with another cart, delaying Lyles’ heat by 30 minutes. Before the first heat, heats two and three were conducted while Jamaican Andrew Hudson underwent treatment for an eyeglass injury.
On Thursday at the world championships, a collision involving a cart bringing 200-meter runners to their quarterfinal race sent glass shards flying into Jamaican sprinter Andrew Hudson’s right eye, causing him to compete with clouded vision.
The 26-year-old, who was competing in his debut world championships, claimed that after the mishap, physicians washed some of the glass out. Despite claiming to be unable to see out of his right eye, he chose to compete in the race.

After settling on a nine-runner race, officials added Hudson, who finished fifth in the first heat, back to the list of finalists.
Olympic silver medalist Kenny Bednarek of the United States finished in second place with a time of 19.96, beating Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who crossed the finish line in 19.97. Just before crossing the finish line, Bednarek cast Tebogo a quick glance.
Since Usain Bolt in 2015, Lyles, 26, is attempting to become the first man to win the sprint double.
American Erriyon Knighton placed fourth, while British 100-meter bronze medalist Zharnel Hughes placed fifth. This season, Hughes broke John Regis’ 30-year-old 200-meter national record.
Olympic champion Andre De Grasse managed to slip in as one of the two quickest losers with a time of 20.10. He had been hindered this season by a foot issue.
Aaron Brown, a teammate, was penalized for crossing the lane line.
