World Champion Again: Holloway Takes 3rd Consecutive Title in 110m Hurdles

Grant Holloway counted out his three 110-meter hurdles world championships while posing for the cameras by raising one finger, then another, then another.

That was as easy as “1, 2, 3.” Holloway nearly gave the impression that his race was simple.

At the world championships on Monday night, the American got off to a quick start and never looked back, cruising to victory in 12.96 seconds and joining an elite group. Greg Foster and Holloway are the only 110-meter hurdlers to have won three straight world championships.

The mighty American hurdlers were in a bit of a hurdling slump before Holloway’s arrival (a funk for them, anyway). They had gone two Worlds in a row without winning a gold in the 110.

That simply wasn’t who they were.

He stated that his celebration in the middle of the track shortly after the race was unplanned. Nothing can be planned when there are ten obstacles in the road, therefore this wasn’t anything that was done beforehand.

Writing a New Chapter in Hurdling History

Grant Holloway counted out his three 110-meter hurdles world championships while posing for the cameras by raising one finger, then another, then another.

Holloway put up all three fingers one last time while the camera was still close-up before leaping off to celebrate. He beat Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment, the current Olympic champion, by.11 seconds. Daniel Roberts, who competed for the United States, finished in third place.

It is only natural that Holloway accomplished his accomplishment on the day that Foster started his at the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, 40 years ago. Foster triumphed once more in 1987 and 1991. Allen Johnson has four total world titles out of 110 hurdles. In 2012, Aries Merritt, another American, broke the record by finishing in 12.80 seconds.

Parchment has developed a fascination with Holloway’s effortless acceleration. When the Jamaican defends his Olympic championship at the Paris Games next summer, Parchment wants to get even better at it.

Like a skilled hurdler, Holloway steers clear of gazing too far ahead. Paris isn’t now on his mind because of this. He won silver at the Tokyo Olympics.
