In contrast to Democratic D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson’s earlier assertion that Washington, D.C. was not facing a crime crisis, recent crime statistics paint a starkly different reality.
Mendelson had sought to downplay concerns surrounding crime, emphasizing that residents should still feel secure and that there wasn’t a crisis in terms of crime. However, data compiled by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department presents a contradictory narrative.
Violent crimes have experienced a notable surge, rising by a significant 38%. This includes a sharp 63% increase in robberies, a 27% uptick in homicides, a 14% rise in sexual abuse cases, and a 4% climb in assaults involving deadly weapons.
Property crimes have also seen a marked upswing of 29%. Within this category, there has been a staggering 167% spike in incidents of arson, a substantial 115% growth in motor vehicle thefts, and a modest 3% increase in burglaries.
What is particularly noteworthy is that these crime rate increases stand in stark contrast to the previous trend from 2021 to 2022, when most crime categories had experienced a decline, with the exception of motor vehicle theft.

This surge in crime rates has prompted urgent calls for action. D.C. Councilmember Trayon White Sr. has gone so far as to propose the deployment of the National Guard to address the escalating crime problem.
White highlighted the severity of the situation, emphasizing the urgent need to protect residents, particularly children and innocent individuals who have been victimized by the senseless violence. He criticized the complacency that had seemingly taken hold within the city and underscored the necessity for a united effort to restore safety and order.
Despite the mounting concerns and calls for intervention, Mendelson has remained silent on the issue. He has not responded to requests for comment regarding the unsettling crime trends and the growing pressure for immediate action to address the safety and well-being of the community.
