Olga Carmona, whose goal on Sunday handed Spain the Women’s World Cup triumph, learned of her father’s passing following the game, according to the Spanish soccer association.
The federation omitted the reason of death or a date of death for Carmona’s father. Also, it was not specified when or by whom Carmona was informed of her father’s passing.
She joined the Spanish players in their celebration and dancing after the game, and she seemed to take an active part in the award ceremony.
Unverified stories in the Spanish media said that Carmona’s father passed away the day before the championship game, but her family chose to wait to inform her until after the game.
Spain defeated England 1-0 in Sydney, Australia, thanks to a goal by Carmona in the 29th minute. She was the first player since American Carli Lloyd in 2015 to score in both the semifinal and championship match of a World Cup when she scored the game-winning goal late in La Roja’s 2-1 semifinal victory over Sweden.

Luis Rubiales on the other hand, the president of the Spanish FA, is currently under fire for kissing Jennifer Hermoso while the celebrations were going on.
Once she received her medal from Fifa President Gianni Infantino, he was spotted helping Spain’s all-time leading scorer off her feet. They exchanged words for a moment before he seemed to seize her face and kiss her.
“I did not enjoy that,” Hermoso said in a statement to Spanish television network La 1.
With the triumph at Stadium Australia in Sydney, Spain became just the second nation, after Germany, to have won both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
The 23-year-old Carmona had earlier celebrated the goal by showing off a message that read “Merchi” on her blouse, which she claimed was a tribute to a friend whose mother had passed away.
The federation had announced that there would be a championship celebration once the team arrived in Madrid on Monday night before the news of Carmona’s father’s passing broke.
It was unclear whether the festivities would take place as planned or if Carmona would take part in any way.
