Amidst a growing debate surrounding actor Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of the late composer Leonard Bernstein in the upcoming biopic “Maestro,” his choices, particularly the use of makeup to alter his appearance, have sparked controversy.

Cooper, who holds the dual roles of director and lead actor in the film, encountered criticism for potentially perpetuating offensive Jewish stereotypes through the modification of his nose. This alteration prompted a mixed reception, with some suggesting it could be seen as insensitive.

However, the response from the Bernstein family has been one of support for Cooper’s creative decisions. They openly defended his portrayal and addressed the use of makeup, clarifying that they were not troubled by its application to enhance the physical resemblance between Cooper and Leonard Bernstein.

Moreover, they expressed confidence that their late father, Leonard Bernstein, would have been accepting of this approach.

In their defense of Cooper, the family dismissed the criticism as attempts to diminish his accomplishments and success. They reiterated their belief in Cooper’s genuine and respectful interpretation of Leonard Bernstein and his spouse, Felicia.
