In order to help Inter Miami defeat the Philadelphia Union and go to the 2023 Leagues Cup final in Philadelphia, Lionel Messi scored his ninth goal in six games.
In the 20th minute of Tuesday’s 4-1 victory in Chester, Pennsylvania, Messi scored. For the Herons, Josef Martinez, Jordi Alba, and David Ruiz all scored goals.
The Leagues Cup final will be held on Saturday in Nashville, where the Herons, who are still in bottom place in MLS, will play Nashville SC. Since Messi joined the team for the start of the Leagues Cup, they are unbeaten (6-0), which has no bearing on MLS standings.
In the third minute, Martinez opened the scoring. To initiate the action, defender Serhiy Kryvtsov threaded a long pass from behind midfield. The far post was narrowly missed by Martinez’s first-touch shot after sprinting into the box.
Less than 16 minutes later, the Herons doubled their advantage. Just past midfield, Martinez received the ball, which led to a play in transition. He then moved his dribble to his left, where Messi was waiting.
Before unleashing a grounded shot from about 30 yards away, Messi stopped the ball and dribbled for approximately 15 yards. The laser flashed by Andre Blake in the goal and landed on the right side of the goal.

Robert Taylor, a fellow Herons attacker, helped left back Jordi Alba score the team’s third goal in first-half injury time. In midfield, Taylor dribbled through a group of defenders to open up space.
Then he advanced and slipped Alba a long through ball. The seasoned defender raced down the field while dribbling, and he concluded the move by shooting into the far post’s net.
Alejandro Bedoya, a midfielder, gave the Union their first goal in the 73rd minute. After a corner kick was deflected, that goal was scored. Before landing roughly six yards from the near post, the ball bounced about the penalty area. Using the outside of his right boot, Bedoya slammed a shot into the net after sprinting to the ball.
The game’s deciding goal was scored in the 84th minute by Herons player David Ruiz. Deandre Yedlin, the right back, dribbled up the right side before passing to Ruiz in the penalty area. Prior to Blake being able to block the shot, the midfielder rushed onto the ball and utilized his right boot to fire into the far post netting.
With the victory, Inter Miami also qualified for the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. On Saturday at 9 p.m. EDT, Inter Miami will play Nashville SC at Geodis Park. Apple TV will broadcast the game.
