AP-NORC Poll Reveals Political Divide on Trump’s Election Case Involvement

A recent poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates a deep partisan divide among Americans regarding their views on former President Donald Trump’s actions in various criminal cases.

About half of respondents believe that Trump’s alleged attempt to interfere in Georgia’s 2020 vote count was illegal. The poll, conducted before the recent charges in the Georgia case, also shows that 53% of Americans approve of the Justice Department indicting Trump for his attempts to stay in office after losing the 2020 election.

A recent poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates a deep partisan divide among Americans regarding their views on former President Donald Trump’s actions in various criminal cases.

Democrats largely support the criminal charges brought against Trump, while independents and Republicans are more divided, with significantly fewer Republicans approving. Despite these indictments, the poll suggests that the electorate’s fundamental division remains intact, with most Americans disapproving of Trump, yet he remains popular within the Republican Party.

Overall, 35% of Americans hold a favorable view of Trump, while 62% view him unfavorably. Within the Republican Party, the majority has a favorable opinion of Trump, and a significant portion would like him to run for the presidency again.

The survey also highlights low confidence in the Justice Department across the political spectrum. Only 17% of respondents express a “great deal” of confidence in the agency, with Republicans showing the least confidence. Many view the charges against Trump as politically motivated, particularly among his supporters.

Americans differ in their opinions on Trump’s alleged wrongdoings. While approximately half believe he acted illegally in cases related to the January 6th insurrection, Georgia charges, and classified documents, fewer believe he acted illegally in the case involving hush money payments.

The majority of Americans believe Trump’s actions after the 2020 election pose a greater threat to democracy than a defense of it.

Although Trump claims the 2020 election was stolen, the poll shows that most Americans believe President Biden’s election was legitimate. However, a significant portion of Republicans still view Biden’s election as illegitimate.
