Massive Fire Outbreak at Russian Fuel Station: Death Toll Reaches 30

Online videos shockingly show the aftermath of a devastating explosion at a gas station in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, which authorities say has left at least 35 people dead and numerous others injured.

The explosion in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, also claimed the lives of three youngsters. According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, 35 people perished and at least 105 were injured.

According to officials, the fire started on Monday night at an auto repair shop by a highway and quickly moved to the nearby petrol station, where it exploded. According to the state-run Tass news agency of Russia, two of the filling station’s eight fuel tanks detonated. The fire had a 6,450 square foot spread and was put out three hours later.

Other footage from the Russian news outlet Sirena that was uploaded to Telegram showed enormous fires and smoke columns rising into the air.

A Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations aircraft is transporting some of the blast victims to hospitals in Moscow, according to state-run news agency RIA Novosti.

The relatives of those killed will receive 1 million rubles ($10,270), while those hurt will earn between 200,000 and 400,000 rubles (about $2,000 to $4,000).

The Dagestani governor, Sergey Melikov, congratulated the regional emergency services in a post on his Telegram channel. They were able to stop the other fuel tanks from burning, which would have had “even more serious consequences,” he claimed, thanks to their brave acts.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened a criminal investigation into the situation. According to a statement from the Russian emergency service, it took firemen more than three and a half hours to completely put out the blaze, which had already extended to an area measuring 600 square meters (715 square yards).

In Dagestan, August 15 has been designated as a day of sorrow.
