Investigators from federal agencies started the arduous task of recording and sorting through the wreckage a day after a retired Russian fighter jet crashed Sunday afternoon at the Yankee Air Museum’s Thunder Over Michigan Airshow in the hopes of discovering clues as to why it malfunctioned.
The privately owned MiG23 that was performing at the event crashed into a parking lot in Van Buren Township and erupted into a huge flame, just missing an apartment building. The two people on board successfully ejected and landed in Belleville Lake.
According to the inquiry thus far, when the plane’s engine lost power, the pilot declared an emergency, an investigator stated. When the two on board were unable to fix the issue, they made the decision to jump out of the plane.
According to officials, the owner of the aircraft, the pilot, suffered significant but not fatal injuries, and the passenger in the backseat sustained less severe wounds.
According to him, the debris field is around 500 feet long and has wreckage strewn all over it. And the earliest evacuated apartment occupants may receive the all-clear to return to their residences on Tuesday.

Military Plane Crash and Contamination Concerns
It was a depressing image with cars filling the streets, yellow police tape, and roving investigators. A few onlookers also attempted to get a sight of the action.
Apartments nearby were surrounded by the wreckage of the military plane, serving as a stark reminder of the potential devastation of the accident. The parking area was crowded with emergency management trucks from several organizations.
The Environmental Protection Agency is assessing the crash site along with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to address contamination concerns.
The airplane pieces will be gathered and transported elsewhere for examination. The two on board ejected, and the aircraft crashed into some trees before coming to rest adjacent to the apartment building.
The final report describing what transpired and what caused the tragedy might take up to two years, according to the NTSB.
