Officials estimated on Saturday that rebuilding on the Hawaiian island of Maui after the disastrous wildfires, which have left dozens of people dead and many more missing, may cost an additional $5 billion.
According to early estimates from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Pacific Disaster Center at the University of Hawaii, at least 2,207 structures were expected to have been damaged or destroyed by the wildfires. It was estimated that 86% of those were residential and 9% were commercial.
According to the research institute, the fires revealed $5.52 billion in capital, which is the expected cost of reconstruction. Additionally, during this procedure 4,500 residents are expected to need continuing emergency shelter.
The historic city of Lahaina has experienced the greatest amount of destruction. The Lahaina fire, the worst of three sizable wildfires that erupted on the island Tuesday and have scorched an estimated 3.39 square miles, destroyed, according to Hawaii Governor Josh Green, roughly 80% of the city.

According to Maui County officials, the Lahaina fire was nearly 85% contained on Sunday.The Maui Economic Development Board estimates that the tourism sector accounts for around 80% of the island’s economic activity.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority reported that between January and June of this year, Maui alone saw 1.49 million visitors. The economic lifeblood of this formerly vibrant town, which now mostly lies in ruins, was tourists, who were drawn to Lahaina.
Greg Knickerbocker, a resident of Lahaina, told APTN News that there are no longer any actual jobs in the area, either in the town or anywhere else. And now my former workplace, a bakery, is on fire.
When Kila Zuttermeister arrived back in Lahaina, he saw that while the homes of his neighbors had all been destroyed, his family’s residence was still standing. The fires’ origin is still a mystery. Tuesday saw the start of the Lahaina fire, which was accompanied by commotion and panic.
