Weather Alert: Japan on High Alert as Typhoon Lan Threatens Flooding

The annual Obon, or Bon, holiday festival in Japan has begun. During this time, millions of people typically travel throughout the nation to visit family.

Typhoon Lan is posing a hazard to various areas of Japan during Bon, which lasts until Wednesday, August 16. Currently east of Japan, the storm is moving gradually north-westward with wind gusts on Sunday of up to 90 to 100 mph.

Although the storm is anticipated to weaken a little when it approaches Japan, it is still anticipated to produce significant amounts of rain, which might result in flooding and disruption.

The storm is expected to deliver substantial amounts of rain, which might cause flooding, even if it is projected to weaken a little as it reaches Japan.

By Tuesday, damaging gusts above 100 mph could strike the Wakayama shore, and big waves might add to the disruption.

Due to the storm’s slow motion as it moves onshore, there is a chance that enormous amounts of rain will fall. Throughout a 24-hour period, 200-400mm of rain is predicted, and in some places, 500mm or more.

The annual Obon, or Bon, holiday festival in Japan has begun. During this time, millions of people typically travel throughout the nation to visit family.

In some areas, it’s conceivable that more rain than twice what it usually does in August may fall in a 24-hour period.

Officials have encouraged locals to change their vacation plans, and airlines and rail companies have already begun to halt operations.

This summer’s weather headlines have been dominated by heatwaves in the northern hemisphere, the wildfires they have fueled, and the efforts of populations to go about their everyday lives in the midst of extreme heat.

While the current dramatic heat wave has somewhat subsided across Europe, it has continued to be extremely hot in Spain and Portugal over the past several days, with temperatures reaching the 40s Celsius.

This week, the heat will move once more northward and eastward, with temperatures reaching the low 30s Celsius, and even 40C in some localized regions, in much of France, the Alps, and Italy.

Although it’s possible for a small period of time, this heat will probably rapidly give way to showers and thunderstorms across the UK.
