Jon Singleton made the most of his first at-bats at Minute Maid Park in more than eight years early on Friday evening.
The left-handed slugger took sure to savor his dinger with a short bat flip before strolling down the first-base line after Singleton’s 390-foot drive flew deep into the right field seats.
The second-inning blast wasn’t Singleton’s only significant fly in the opening innings. In the third inning, he pounced on another pitch from Angels starter Reid Detmers, sending the ball into orbit before it came down barely inside the foul pole in right field.
Over ten years went into Singleton’s early blasts in the game on Friday. Early in the last decade, after being acquired in a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, he became Houston’s top prospect. However, Singleton was released by the Astros in 2018 following three drug-related suspensions.

After a brief run in the Major League this season with the Milwaukee Brewers, he was released. Late last week, Singleton made his debut start with the Astros after decimating pitching in Triple-A Sugar Land.
Although being called up initially as a left-handed backup option, Singleton might see some regular playing time in the upcoming weeks. Due to a sore back, starting first baseman Jose Abreu was unable to play on Friday. After having an MRI on Friday, he may have to spend some time on the injured list.
Given Abreu’s difficulties and Singleton’s extraordinary power, a platoon might be necessary even if Abreu is healthy in September and October.
The MLB tale of Singleton was once something of a squandered chance. He does, however, seem to be enjoying his second stay in Houston. One of the Astros’ season’s most satisfying subplots could begin with Friday’s home runs.
