Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey on Tuesday proclaimed a state of emergency in the liberal state due to an influx of migrants that she claims has overburdened social services. She also called on the federal government for additional cash and assistance.
Healey, a Democrat, declared a state of emergency due to the rapid and unabating rises in the number of families with children and pregnant women residing in the state but being unable to find safe housing in our neighborhoods. Many of these individuals are recently arrived migrants and refugees.
More than 20,000 people, or almost 5,600 families, are reportedly housed in state shelters, according to the state.
The elimination of COVID-era services, a dearth of affordable housing, and federal immigration and work authorization regulations are just a few of the many causes cited by Healey.

Despite not being located anywhere near the threatened southern border, Massachusetts is the most liberal state to request assistance from the federal government in response to an increase of migrants.
This year, in response to a wave of migrants, New York City, Chicago, and the state of New York have all declared states of emergency and requested assistance.
Despite the fact that the numbers represent a tiny fraction of the hundreds of thousands of migrants who cross the border each month, those locations have proclaimed themselves overloaded and at capacity as more people come.
Healey said that 100 families per day were seeking emergency shelter in July, despite a two-thirds decrease in the number of people leaving shelter since 2019 and spending for programs reaching $45 million per month.
Many of these families moved to Massachusetts from other states, drawn by our reputation as a haven for people in need.
She also cited the complex web of immigration regulations, the impossibility of immigrants to secure federal work permits, the rise in immigration to Massachusetts, and the dearth of affordable housing options in our state.
