Tuesday saw the first excessive heat warning ever issued for Palm Beach County, which covered almost the entirety of South Florida, according to forecasters.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, highs were forecast to reach the mid- to upper-90s by afternoon, with heat indices or feels-like temperatures reaching as high as 115 degrees in some locations.
The new record set on Tuesday serves as yet another illustration of how unusually hot it has been in South Florida this year, both in terms of how hot it has been and how long the heat wave has lasted and will continue to last.
However, this year has been particularly oppressive and out of the ordinary when compared to previous years, according to Cameron Pine, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.The high heat alert issued for Glades and Hendry counties on Tuesday is also the first one ever.

Excessive Heat Warnings Rare in South Florida
Since the National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for South Florida almost daily this summer, it is safe to assume that the area has felt temperatures of at least 108 degrees for at least two hours in Broward and Palm Beach counties and 105 degrees in Miami-Dade.
The feels-like temperature in Broward and Palm Beach counties must reach at least 113 degrees for at least two hours, while in Miami-Dade it must be higher than 110 degrees in order to qualify for an excessive heat warning.
As opposed to multiple times in a month and a half, forecasters typically only issue an excessive heat warning every few years, according to Pine.
Palm Beach County also experiences slightly higher cloud cover and rainfall than more southern counties, factors that typically serve to buffer the heat but have been ineffective against the hot sea surface temperatures and low atmospheric moisture levels.
