Black organizations, including the biggest black fraternity, have said they may relocate their conferences due to Florida’s detrimental and discriminatory legislation.
The 99th General Convention and 119th Anniversary Convention of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, set to take place in Orlando, Florida in 2025, will now take place in another city, according to Dr. Willis L. Lonzer III, general president of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, who made the announcement on Thursday, July 26 during a current convention.
According to APAF, Florida’s contribution to tyranny and slavery is minimized in the controversial new K–12 curriculum for African American history, which places the blame on the victims of the slaves. Additionally, it claims that the terrible and disgusting institution of slavery benefited African Americans who were subjected to it.
The 97th General Convention and 117th Anniversary Convention of the APAF, which is now taking place in Dallas, Texas, grabbed headlines on the first day. In a press release, the fraternity said that the news “amplifies” its motto, Strengthening the Brotherhood and Standing for Social Justice.

Alpha Phi Alpha’s Activism Shifts Amid Conflict
They calculated that the occurrence would affect the Sunshine State’s economy to the tune of $4.6 million.
The history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in the Black community is one of social justice, advocacy, and leadership.
The speaker stated that “Alpha Phi Alpha refuses to direct a projected $4.6 million convention economic impact to a location hostile to the communities we serve” in light of the context of manufactured conflict and attacks on the Black community.
Alpha Phi Alpha will still back the tenacious activism of Alpha Brothers and other activists who are battling against Governor Ron DeSantis’ continued assault on our communities there, even though we are moving our convention out of Florida.
A group of groups opposed to DeSantis’ policies includes APAF in their coalition. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), among other groups, is moving some of its gatherings outside the state, according to FOX 13.
