During an extensive campaign marked by widespread arson, the military junta of Myanmar, aligned with Russia and a recipient of arms from China, has obliterated approximately 75,000 residences.
This junta, which is under American sanctions, forcibly ousted Aung San Suu Kyi from her leadership position in Myanmar in February 2021.
The occurrences have been regularly documented by witnesses and local media, even though the military occasionally refutes them. These acts are part of the junta’s efforts to suppress dissent and maintain control, as they engage in a progressively arduous struggle against individuals opposing their rule.
According to data gathered by the independent organization Data for Myanmar, between May 1, 2021, and July 31, 2023, military forces and their affiliated groups destroyed a total of 74,874 civilian residences. A significant surge in incidents took place between September 2022 and January 2023, as highlighted in a recent report by the monitoring group “Burma Witness.” During July alone, 2,086 homes were set ablaze.
Despite attempts to seek information through the Ministry of Information, the Myanmar regime did not provide a response. The analysis presented by Burma Witness, which relies on open-source data, thoroughly examines the documented fires during the period mentioned above.

Investigation Exposes Military’s Role in Arson Attacks in Myanmar
A comprehensive investigation was conducted by the team, employing on-site photographs that were geolocated and cross-referenced with satellite data on fires. This meticulous approach was undertaken to verify both the timing and locations of the incidents.
Various Western nations have called upon Myanmar’s military to relinquish the authority it seized subsequent to Suu Kyi’s resounding victory in the 2020 elections and to cease its ongoing warfare against a broad spectrum of opponents.
Through significant visits by junta leader Min Aung Hlaing to Moscow and key Russian officials to Myanmar, Russia has emerged as Myanmar’s most prominent ally.
The provision of assistance to Myanmar by Russia, as stated by the United States, is contributing to instability in Southeast Asia.
The weaponry employed in the destruction of villages across extensive areas of Myanmar, including combat aircraft and helicopters, is predominantly sourced from Russia.
According to the NGO Help Group for Political Prisoners, the death toll resulting from military crackdowns since the coup stands at a minimum of 3,888 individuals. It is important to note that this figure does not encompass all casualties among combatants.
