Both Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill are attempting to revive the expanded child tax credit, yet they are encountering an old obstacle.
Democrats look for a full return of the expanded child tax credit from President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 stimulus bill, whereas Republicans are advancing their own version of the child tax credit, which includes regulations for unborn kids as well as expectant mothers and is supported by anti-abortion groups.
However, some Republicans who have stated their support for expanding the child tax credit have stated that any version which would gain their support must be more limited. Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) told USA TODAY that he wants assurances that a tax credit will be “fully paid for.”
Restoring an expanded tax credit receives support from both sides of the political spectrum. In 2021, the expanded credit under the Biden administration lifted 5.3 million individuals out of poverty, including 2.9 million children, based on an analysis by the Democrats’ Joint Economic Committee.

Own Version of Expanded Child Tax Credit
One GOP version supported by Representative Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) would broaden the child tax credit to include embryonic children and expectant mothers.
The Providing for Life Act, sponsored by Hinson and Rubio, would increase the refunded child tax credit to $4,500 for each child under the age of six while offering up to $3,500 for children under the age of eighteen in working families.
The proposed Republican legislation additionally includes provisions that boost anti-abortion funds and assistance for faith-based social service organizations that receive federal funding.
Nevertheless, Democrats are reluctant to support legislation that expands anti-abortion group protections.
Torres stated that he would oppose any effort to link the child tax credit to abortion.
