Google Explores AI Writing: Tool Generates News Articles

The New York Times, The Washington Post, and News Corp., the owner of The Wall Street Journal, are among the major organizations that Google is pitching its artificial intelligence-powered content creation services to.

According to the individuals, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the project, the tool, internally known by the working title Genesis, can take in information(for instance, specifics of recent events) and create news content.

One of the three people with knowledge of the concept said that Google saw it as a potential technology that might help steer the publishing business away from the problems of generative AI, automating some tasks to make time for others, essentially serving as a personal assistant for journalists.

Other business executives who viewed Google’s offer described it as alarming while requesting anonymity to discuss a private topic. The effort that went into creating factual and creative news items seemed to be taken for granted.

Many organizations, including The Times, NPR, and Insider, have informed their staff that they want to investigate potential applications of artificial intelligence (A.I.) to examine how it might be ethically used in the high-stakes world of news, where seconds matter and accuracy is crucial.

When compared to pieces produced by journalists, some news companies, like The Associated Press, have long used artificial intelligence to write stories about topics like corporate earnings reports.

Artificial intelligence may change that by making it possible for users to produce articles on a larger scale that, if not carefully reviewed and verified, may disseminate false information and alter how traditionally written stories are seen.

Many prominent A.I. businesses, like Google, have come under fire from publishers and other content creators for exploiting decades’ worth of their articles and postings as training data for their systems without paying the authors. 

NBC News and The Times are two news organizations that have spoken out against artificial intelligence (AI) programs stealing their data without their consent.
